The Porcelain Tower of Nanjing lies on the south bank
of the Yangtze in Nanjing, China. It was constructed in the 15th century.
The people of China called it Bao'ensi, or the "Temple of Gratitude".
European visitors, who beheld the structure, called it the Porcelain Tower
of Nanjing and labelled it one of the Wonders of the World. For many people, who had known the tower firsthand, it was a sublimely elegant example
of a Buddhist pagoda. Warfare and subsequent destruction overtook it in
the 19th century, and it is now under reconstruction.
