Stonehenge lies in the English county of Wiltshire,
about 13 kilometres north of Salisbury. It has earthworks surrounding
a circular setting of large-standing stones and is one of the most famous
prehistoric sites in the world. It is estimated that the standing stones
were erected around 3200 BC. Stonehenge is surely Britain's greatest national
icon, symbolising mystery, power and endurance. Its original purpose is
unclear to us, but some have speculated that it was a temple made for
the worship of ancient earth deities. Others claim it was a sacred site
for the burial of high-ranking citizens.
