The Colosseum, a giant amphitheatre, is the most famous
monument of ancient Rome and is located at the centre of the city. Its
original name is Flavian Amphitheatre. It was started by Emperor Vespasian
between 70 and 76 AD, and completed by his son, Titus, in 80 AD. The Colosseum
was dedicated after Vespasian's death by Titus. He celebrated the opening
by holding 100 days worth of games at the place. Originally capable of
seating 45,000-50,000 spectators, it was used for gladiatorial contests
and public spectacles.
