Situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, Australia, the Sydney Opera
House is one of the most distinctive, famous 20th century buildings, and
one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world. It is administered
by the Opera House Trust under the New South Wales Ministry of the Arts.
The Opera House covers 1.8 hectares (4.5 acres) of land. It is 605 feet
long and about 388 feet wide at its widest point. Dedicated in 1973, it
has come to symbolise Australia, as the pyramids of Egypt and the Colosseum
of Rome. With a roof evocative of a ship at full sail, the Opera House
was designed by renowned Danish architect Jorn Utzon.
