ANCIENT SEVEN
The Colossus of Rhodes was a huge statue of the Greek
god Helios erected on the Greek island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos (student
of Greek sculptor Lysippos) between 292 and 280 BC. From its building
to its destruction lies a timespan of merely 56 years. Yet the colossus
earned a place in the famous list of the Wonders. The Colossus of Rhodes
was not only a gigantic statue, it was rather a symbol of unity of the
people who inhabited the beautiful Mediterranean island, Rhodes. Before
its destruction, it was the tallest statue of the ancient world, standing
at over 98.42 feet.
